In April 2002, Lisa Miller was able to fulfill a lifelong dream when a local barber retired and placed his business on the market—including the building. It seemed a perfect combination since the building was already used for a salon, already had customers and offered sufficient space to accommodate several sun tanning tables, a service that would generate additional income.

In addition, Lisa had approximately 10 years of experience in the hairstyling business and would bring her own clients to the business. Lisa's children were in school, and her husband was totally supportive. Cash investment would be partially provided by her parents.

Lisa did face a challenge of a first-time business owner seeking SBA-guaranteed financing. Because the building and equipment were fairly priced and there were already customers to support the business, Jerry Darnell, director of the Northwest Missouri State University SBDC at St. Joseph, utilized the SBA Pre-Qual loan application. She was referred to the SBDC by the local chamber of commerce. Lisa received quick approval, and the Citizens Bank and Trust stepped up to provided the financing to buy the business and provide for the planned asset addition.

Lisa successfully acquired a going business and was able to sustain the services for the neighborhood. She has added tanning booths to meet demand for that service. Sales have increased, and she is now leasing the second chair to provide additional income. Lisa has exhibited the skills necessary to manage a small business and continues to serve the St. Joseph community by operating a fairly priced hairstyling service.
