Managing
his own motorcycle customization business and attending UMKC to earn
an MBA keeps Ray Alarid quite busy. But when he and business partner
Marty Geunther developed an idea that would dramatically affect the
trucking industry, Ray's entrepreneurial sprit would not let the opportunity
pass him by.
Ray turned to the SBDC at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg
for help in turning their idea into a profitable reality. The center
assisted the entrepreneurs in their start-up process: connecting them
to the UMKC Entrepreneurial Law Clinic for help
in
establishing a partnership agreement, and to specialists at CMSU to
work through the patent process.
Ray and Marty's tool, which makes the loading and unloading processes
for truckers quicker and more efficient, has been well-received in
the trucking community. More than 1,000 pieces have already been ordered,
and production arrangements have been made with a manufacturer in
China.
Manufacturing a tool that has revolutionized the trucking industry
is one of several reasons Ray Alarid was named the 2002 Student Entrepreneur
of the Year by the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration.
