Start-Up Checklist

Be sure to consider the following to develop a solid foundation for your business:

  • Research your chosen business. Study the competition, identify resources, gather information about the industry.

  • Consult an attorney. Determine your business legal structure: Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation, Limited Liability Company.

  • Consult an accountant. Determine which type of business structure will work best for you, from a financial perspective. Establish a record keeping system.

  • Prepare your business plan. Include financial objectives, marketing plan, marketing research and business structure.

  • Obtain a Home Occupation Permit from the city, if applicable. (See licensing)

  • Register with the county. (See licensing)

  • Contact the state to determine requirements for your business at the state level. Request a state sales tax application, if applicable. Missouri has a detailed booklet available for start-up businesses. (See licensing)

  • Determine Federal tax obligations.

  • Determine insurance needs. Talk with your agent about liability and malpractice insurance requirements.
