Instructions for project profile forms

A. Make a list of keywords
Think of words related to your research topic. These keywords will be used in electronic search engines to locate potential solicitation topics across federal agencies involved in the SBIR/STTR program.

B. Search SBIR/STTR solicitation topics
The Solicitations listed on SBIR Gateway are copies from the various SBIR/STTR agency solicitations and are not necessarily the latest and most up-to-date. For this reason, you should use the suggested links at the bottom of each reference page. These will take you directly to the appropriate agency server where you can obtain the official version of the entire solicitation including the agency's rules and necessary forms.

  1. Visit Zyn's Open SBIR/STTR Solicitation Topics or Historical Database of Closed Solicitations. (These sites are linked under "Search services" at: www.missouribusiness.net/fast/search_assist_services.asp.) Be sure to search both open and closed solicitations for topics.
  2. Enter keyword(s) in the search for field
  3. Select agency from drop list
  4. Select Search Solicitations
  5. Review search results.
  6. Click on highlighted solicitation topic link to review topic description.
    • Note the solicitations listed on this site are partial copies from the various SBIR/STTR agency solicitations and are not necessarily the latest and most up-to-date. For this reason, you should always use the suggested links on SBIR Gateway's reference pages to obtain the official version of the solicitation.
    • Note the point of contact to direct your inquiries about the solicitation topic is listed on this page.
    • Note the solicitation open and close dates are listed on this page.
  7. Follow the suggested links to the appropriate agency information at the bottom where you the official version of the solicitation you are interested in.
    • Carefully read the official version of the solicitation, as this information will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the solicitation topic.
    • Follow the instructions carefully.
  8. Perform new search, if necessary by repeating steps 2 thru 7.

C. Search Past Winners SBIR/STTR Awards
The database, tech-net.sba.gov/index.cfm, offers an electronic search engine for individuals seeking small business partners, small business contractors and subcontractors, leading edge technology research, research partners (small businesses, universities, federal labs and non-profit organizations), manufacturing centers and investment opportunities.

D. Search Pro-Net for Business Profiles
The database,tech-net.sba.gov/index.cfm, offers an electronic search engine for contracting officers and serves as a marketing tool for small businesses that register with the system. It contains the profiles of thousands of small firms.

Open the link to get a complete list of agencies and their Web sites involved in the SBIR/STTR program: zyn.com/sbir/#agsites

F. SBIR/STTR Solicitation Date Finder
Visit the list of solicitation dates at: www.zyn.com/sbir/scomp.htm

G. Complete the Project Profile form provided by Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Centers
After completing steps A thru F, you should have zeroed on a solicitation topic appropriate for your research plan. The next step is to obtain the project profile form found at www.missouribusiness.net/fast/docs/form_project_profile.doc, follow the instructions (instructions_project_profile.asp) and electronically return your profile to begin the first phase of the process.
