P2: Hospitality Recycling and Waste Exchange

Develop an in-house recycling program.

  • Place recycling containers where they are conveniently located for guest use (in guest rooms, next to soda machines, etc.)
  • Recycle cardboard packaging and pallets or arrange with your supplier to reuse them. Recycle newspapers, office paper, and telephone directories.
  • Recycle plastic, glass, and aluminum from restaurant, bar areas, and guest rooms.

Donate leftover food, amenities and other "extras" to local shelters or other charitable organizations.

  • Inquire about donating perishable banquet leftovers to homeless shelters or other charitable organizations.
  • Donate used linens, blankets, mattresses, furnishings, carpet, and equipment to charitable organizations.

Reduce landscaping wastes by composting grass clippings and chipping branches and downed trees to use as mulch in flowerbeds or along trails

Recycle stained or torn linens

  • Stained tablecloths can be cut down into napkins
  • Towels can be dyed a darker color for reuse at the pool areas
  • Old sheets can be sown into cloth laundry bags or used as cleaning rags
  • Inquire whether local charities recycle fabrics
