P2: Hospitality Materials and Waste Storage

Institute a first-in first-out method when dealing with chemicals.

Keep storage areas and work areas clean and well organized.

  • Spills and leaks will be more noticeable
  • Staff won't waste time looking for materials and tools
  • Money won't be wasted purchasing duplicates

Check material shelving periodically to ensure that it is sturdy.

Store materials on pallets so that leaks can be found easily.

  • Check chemical containers periodically to ensure there are no leaks and that the container is tightly sealed.
  • Have containment pans to catch leaks.

Store chemical containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.

Properly label containers and storage areas

  • Prevent damage to equipment from staff using the wrong material
  • Hazardous materials storage (e.g., for swimming pool chemicals) should lock and bear the appropriate signage for fire fighters and other emergency responders
