P2: Hospitality Housekeeping

Use water-based paints and adhesives instead of solvent-based materials.

  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Safer storage for leftovers

Evaluate cleaners and other chemicals used throughout the facility.

  • Use non-hazardous or less hazardous cleaning supplies and laundry products.

To learn more, check out the website on P2 Janitorial Products, for more information on which products pose greater risk for staff and sensitive guests.

  • Buy cleaning products in bulk and in concentrated form to reduce packaging waste
  • Order only the amount of product that can be used before it expires
  • Use refillable pump spray bottles containers for cleaning supplies instead of single-use aerosol cans that release air pollutants

Reuse or eliminate plastic trashcan liners in guest rooms.

Use microfiber mops.

  • Mops heads are soaked in cleaning solution and wrung out before attaching to mop – less cleaning fluid is used
  • Dirty heads are dropped into laundry so cleaning solution is not contaminated – no cross contamination of rooms
  • Lightweight mops reduce time, effort and injuries

Offer optional linen and towel reuse in guest rooms.

  • Post signs in rooms asking guests who stay more than one night to consider using their towels and linens more than once.
  • Post cards in guest rooms to educate guests that reusing linens reduces water and energy use.

The "Green" Hotels Association® markets these cards and other water and energy saving ideas.

Wait to replace tissues in bathrooms until dispensers are almost empty

  • Leave new rolls or boxes for the guests to replace.
  • If the company policy is to replace half rolls, save them for use in employee restrooms or as donations to shelters.
  • Consider using double rolls, which provide twice as much paper per roll.
