Develop a P2 Plan

The steps to setting up a pollution prevention plan are fairly straight forward. Here are some basic guidelines:

  1. Have total management support.
    • Ensures the commitment of hours and resources
    • Identifies P2 as a company goal

  2. Educate and involve all employees.
    • Generates better ideas
    • Identifies more comprehensive P2 opportunities

  3. Use the team approach.
    • Large businesses may form teams from purchasing, maintenance, accounting, management, production, shipping, environmental services, and other departments.
    • Small businesses may have everyone on one team.

  4. Collect data.
    • Conduct a waste assessment
    • Conduct an energy use assessment
    • Review your total costs for disposal and energy (including add on fees)

  5. Have teams report progress regularly.
    • Brainstorm options
    • Determine which options should be explored further
    • Consider technical and economic feasibility
    • Evaluate and rank viable options

  6. Present findings to management and employees.
    • Get feedback and support for options.

  7. Develop implementation plan and schedule.
    • Start with one or two basic goals to get everyone working together
    • Begin on a small scale and expand as the benefits become obvious

  8. Evaluate.
    • Compare new costs with baseline costs
    • Measure reductions in use, disposal or discharge.
    • Adjust your program, if needed, and look for continuous improvement

  9. Publicize your P2 efforts.
    • Share your environmental successes with the community
    • Share successes with us! We want to feature environmental efforts in the Missouri Business Development Program's "Going Green" column
    • Apply for environmental awards in the community, state, region and even national recognition programs! See Awards and Recognition Program for some ideas of who recognizes P2 efforts (it is standard practice and appropriate to nominate your company for awards).
