If you are looking for affordable expertise to help your company reduce energy, cut waste, conserve water and save money, now is the time to start planning! The University of Missouri Environmental Assistance Center (EAC) is looking for a few good companies, government entities, and institutions for placing our pollution prevention interns during summer 2010.
Mizzou Pollution Prevention Program interns are highly trained upper level engineering students who can help companies improve environmental performance and save money, according to Marie Steinwachs, EAC director.
"We are expecting impressive results when the 2009 projects are completed," says Steinwachs. "Six great interns are out in the field working on improving efficiencies in lighting, boilers, motors, HVAC systems and cooling towers for some very large facilities."
In 2008, three interns identified savings of over 797,000 kWh of electricity, 84 tons of waste, and 14,100 MMBTU of natural gas. These efforts reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,450 metric tons and cut company costs by more than $260,000. Payback period for most recommendations is two years or less.
Interns are matched to company needs by a careful screening process. They are required to complete "P2 Boot Camp" a rigorous applied engineering course that prepares students to identify and evaluate pollution prevention opportunities. During the summer internship, students have the advisory support of engineering faculty and the national pollution prevention network.
In addition to energy assessments, the P2 intern program seeks companies with projects involving water use/reuse, wastewater, stormwater, air quality, solid and hazardous waste.
