Missouri Regulations: Underground Storage Tanks

An Underground Storage Tank (UST) is defined as a tank and any associated pipes having 10% or more of its volume underground. USTs containing petroleum products or hazardous substances can harm the environment and human health if the contents are released. Therefore, these tanks are subject to regulation and will require a permit from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources before installation can occur. Contact the Hazardous Waste Program at (573) 751-3176 or your MDNR Regional Office. For more information on Underground Storage Tank permit requirements, see MDNR’s Environmental Permits and How to Obtain Them.

Cleaning up and reusing abandoned gas station sites is a target for economic development in many communities. The MDNR can assist businesses with putting together public-private partnerships to clean up petroleum contaminated sites and return them to productive use.
