Missouri Regulations: Mixed Waste

Whenever non-hazardous solid waste has been mixed with or contaminated by a hazardous waste or substance, the mixture is usually considered hazardous and is subject to hazardous waste regulations.  Examples of mixed/contaminated wastes include used engine coolant, and paint booth filters, and solvent contaminated rags.

Universal Wastes

Universal wastes are specific hazardous wastes that are widespread, commonly found in medium to large volumes, and are either a low-level hazard or easy to manage. Universal wastes in Missouri include rechargeable and lead-acid batteries, mercury containing thermostats and switches, fluorescent bulbs (pdf), and pesticides. The universal waste rule eases the regulatory burden on businesses by streamlining administrative, storage and transporation requirements. Visit www.dnr.mo.gov/pubs/pub2058.pdf for more information on universal wastes.

Electronic Wastes

Certain electronics (e.g., computer monitors) are considered hazardous waste and must be reused, recycled or managed as hazardous waste. For more information, see MDNR Summary of Missouri Hazardous Waste Regulations for Collection, Reuse and Recycling of Electronics (pdf) and the Computer/Electronics Recycling List for information on area recyclers.
